best polk soundbar

The mid-variety MagniFi line consists of the MagniFi 2, which we’re reviewing right here, along with the compact 2.1-channel MagniFi Mini ($299) and the 5.1-channel MagniFi MAX SR ($599), which comes with wi-fi surrounds and Chromecast aid. Finally, the 2.1-channel Polk Audio Command Bar (which we’ve also reviewed) comes with onboard Alexa, complete with Alexa’s telltale halo mild on top .

The Polk Audio MagniFi 2 is a two hundred-watt, 2.1-channel soundbar, with two oval-shaped 1 x 3-inch midrange drivers and one 0.75-inch tweeter for each of the left and middle channels within the main unit,  plus an eight-inch down-firing cone in the ported wi-fi subwoofer for low-frequency effects. Each driver receives its personal devoted Class-D amplifier.

Like other 2.1-channel soundbars, the MagniFi 2 lacks a devoted middle channel, that is generally reserved for conversation.  Instead, the left and right channels combine to create a 3rd, “phantom” middle channel, a technique which can (relying on the satisfactory of the soundbar’s audio processing) make conversation sound distractingly echo-y. We’ll compare the MagniFi 2’s audio nice a bit later in our evaluation.

The MagniFi 2 doesn’t assist immersive 3D audio formats including Dolby Atmos or DTS:X, nor does it come geared up with DTS Virtual:X, a popular sound mode that teases virtualized surround and peak effects from as few as  drivers, with out the want for both in-ceiling speakers or upfiring drivers that soar audio off the ceiling. Instead, the MagniFi 2 boasts Polk Audio’s own SDA (Stereo Dimentional Array) audio processing and its new 3-D audio mode, which lets in the soundbar to deliver virtualized surround and height cues .

Virtualized 3D sound has its professionals and cons. Unsurprisingly , you’ll pay attention more unique peak cues from upfiring drivers that bounce hold forth your ceiling, or—even higher—height audio system which are  hooked up to your ceiling. That said, now not everybody desires to undergo the hassle of installing in-ceiling audio system, and upfiring drivers gained’t be powerful if you have a vaulted ceiling or acoustic ceiling tiles. In the ones scenarios, a soundbar with a digital three-D sound mode is probably your high-quality option. Again, we’ll determine the effectiveness of the MagniFi 2’s custom 3-D audio mode in the performance section of our overview.
